Though some would be loath to admit it (and that undoubtedly includes me), Newcastle is without doubt the Capital of the North-East. As well as having great shops, pubs, nightlife, museums and entertainment facilities, it also has first class communications.
Newcastle is well served by road, rail, air and sea and it is the last major city when heading North to Scotland on the Eastern side of the country.
The city itself stands on the North bank of the Tyne and extends some two miles either side of the Tyne Bridge. It is quite common these days to think of Newcastle as being the whole of the North Tyneside conurbation, stretching right out to the coast to encompass North Shields, Tynemouth and Whitley Bay. Some residents of Gateshead, the large town of the South bank of the Tyne, refer to themselves as "living in Newcastle", and these days there are many joint ventures between the two cities which furher blur the boundaries.
Newcastle is famous for it's bridges - indeed only one other town in the UK has the same density of bridges on it's river as Newcastle - and that's it's neighbour on the opposite bank, Gateshead! There are now 7 bridges crossing the river in the area that could be described as "central Newcastle". The most famous is obviously the one in this picture, the one referred to simply as "The Tyne Bridge".
Newcastle is very much a "party" city - it was recently voted number 8 in the world for nighlife and partying and also it's currently applying for a stint as "European Capital Of Culture", which I would think it stands a good chance of attaining.
The majority of the pictures on this page were taken in the winter, and this far North in the winter, the sun never rises very high in the sky, giving the whole city a very special sort of light and the pictures a lot of contrast. Also, some of the entries are just place holders at the moment, until I get some more of my photoes back!
The topics under "General" follow a walk which starts at the University Campus on Claremont Road, heads down Haymarket, to St. James Park, Stowell Street, Westgate Road, St. Marys, Life, Central Station, St. Nicholas, The Keep, Side/Dean Street, Quayside, Dean Street/Grey Street, Northumberland Road. |

MikeStarr5 Mon Oct 29, 2007 22:37 UTC Great pic - Thanks. Here in "Barking Town" we have the UK's 2nd largest public artwork called "Holding Pattern" - It's 70m long x 50m wide and almost 6m high. It cost £650,000 to build and only Anthony Gormley's “Angel of the North” is bigger. | Bigs Wed Feb 8, 2006 19:53 UTC Thanks for the postcard from Newcastle...I want to go there too..........well ok, London first!!! :) | sandysmith Thu Mar 24, 2005 00:09 UTC need to come back for a reflection like that ;-0....the angel makes sense ;-0 | deeper_blue Sun Sep 12, 2004 02:00 UTC Excellent page on Geordieland, nice one |
