The Hotel Marquesa is Tenerife's oldest hotel, having been built sometime around 1750. It stands right beside the town's church in the old town, and close to most things - shops, restaurants, cafes, harbour, seafront, lido and so on. The only things that it's not so near to are really all up in the La Paz district - botanical gardens, bananera, casino and so on. The bus station is only 10 minutes walk away, the Playa Jardin (main beach) about 15 minutes walk.
There is always something going on outside in the square by the church, and in addition the hotel usually has its own entertainment, in the form of traditional bands or singers, playing on its terrace overlooking the church square. Despite this, and our room faced onto all of that, it was never too noisy in our room.
Unique Qualities: We had a room in "the old part", right on the front overlooking the square and up to Teide. Most of the rooms though are in a more modern annex behind and beside the hotel. I can't comment on what those rooms are like, but ours was comfortable and not too small, though really quite basic. Its rustic charm (and the views from the window) made up for anything that it lacked in other ways.
We were half board (that was the only tarriff they did) though we never intended to eat there. That is just as well, because we did look in on dinner each night and there was nothing there for us. Carnivores will do OK, but vegetarians have no chance. There was a soup that we could have each day, and a desert, but no main course at all.
Breakfast was adequate without being too special, and they served a whole host of thngs that looked terribly disgusting to us. Potted and jugged meats, various "jellies" that varied in colour and were all of meaty origin, sausages aplenty (one woman had in the order of 20 suasages on her plate!) and (thankfully) cereals, breads, cheeses and fruit. They definitely cater towards the Germanic side of the market, including Czechs & Slovaks.
