    • Venice is one of the safest places I ever visited. Crime is almost unheard of, especially violent crime against the person. You can wander just about anywhere, even in the most run down of areas (and a lot of Venice looks quite run down, it's the nature of the place). There are wonderful things to find all over the city, so don't be afraid to wander away from the main tourist drags (see my Off The Beaten Path section for some idea of what these places are). Maybe one of the resaons Venice is so safe is these guys... the police always travel around in gangs of 4 to 9 and you meet loads of them (and my wife drools longingly over them :-S)

    • I only bought Vaporetto passes 3 times - a week pass, a day pass and a 3 day pass. Twice I was behind and American in the queue and once behind an Australian (or New Zealander, sorry guys but I really can't tell). And on every occasion the girl on the ticket booth gave them the wrong amount of change - and on every occasion the person noticed this and challnged the girl, who then paid up the correct change without argument. Now once can be a mistake, twice can be coincidence but three times I think is a deliberate attempt to fiddle tourists out of money. I never had this problem myself, and never saw it anywhere else other then the ticket booth of the ACTV boats (it was always the one outside the railway station). The moral therefore is be careful of your change!
