When there is an Aqua Alte (high tide) and Venice floods, the square takes on a different character. It's full of people having fun in a mad, wet sort of way. You'll have to see the travelogue for more pics & info, but here's a taster.

This is probably the livliest square in Venice. It's lined with restaurants, bars and cafes and these are fairly quiet by day but throbbing by night. The bars all spill out onto the street, some have live music, and the restaurants can require prior booking. The bars stay open later here than elsewhere in Venice, so if you're a nightbird, this is the place to come. The Vaparettos run all night, so don't worry about getting home if you're staying a fair distance from here.

Rio Terra Lista Di Spagna / Rio Terra S. Leonardo / Rio Terra Maddalena / Strada Nuova
This long, long street running from almost the railway station right through Cannaregio almost as far as the Rialto Bridge is lined with trattoria, restaurants, hotels, bars, cafes, pasticceria, ice cream vendors, shops, market stalls... you name it. It's a lively and pleasant part of town, away from the usual tourist traps of St Marks.

Lively and busy area, just back a couple of rows from Rio Terra Maddalena (see above). Bars and cafes in a canal side setting, mainly frequented by locals and with a different sort of feel. Not at all 'threatening' (nothing in Venice is), but maybe not quite so cozy as in the more touristy areas.

All over Venice there are pubs, bars, cafes, trattoria, restaurants. Go down any narrow alley or dimly lit street, and at the end you're bound to find something (and don't be worried in such places, Venice is very safe).
The variety of places is mind blowing, and often you'll just stumble across something that you like the look of (and then the next day when you try to find it again, you can't - cos Venice is such a warren of winding streets and canals).

A special sort of ambience, the cafes here are busier by night than by day, and almost all have their own bands playing. Those who aren't sitting tend to wander from cafe to cafe and just listen to the different music being played.

Probably the most famous bar in Venice, frequented by the rich and by celebrities throughout it's history - from Ernest Hemmingway to Madonna and Nicole Kidman. (Dunno if Kylie's been, she wasn't there when I was in town!).

You have some amazing pictures and some really great information, much more than the usual tourist stuff. I envy the time you were able to spend to really get to know Venice... :)

Nice tips about Venice with some interesting facts. I was here on a school trip as a lad and got lost, hitched back to our camp site and fell asleep in our tent while the cops were scouring the canals with my school chums...Tim
