  • Hotel Carlton Excelsior (or Executive, or Carlton & Grand Canal...) The hotels seem to change their names more often than they change their signs.
341 Euro per night for a double room, including breakfast.

Unique Qualities: Nice hotel, good location (handy for railway & Piazzale Roma (busses & cars))

Unique Qualities: The bedroom is quite nice, but not overly big. There was no view of anything (the window faced the building opposite - about 2 meters away).

  • Quiet luxurious and very spacious apartment. It has a large entrance hall, dining room, kitchen, bath/shower/toilet room, 2 large bedrooms, living room and second shower/toilet room. It also has a quite large, fully enclosed garden.
It's fitted with everything you need, including a washing machine, TV and CD player. It has a full cooker with oven, and a microwave.

    (pics of the apartment below...)

Unique Qualities: Lovely apartment having everything you could possibly need for a great time in Venice.

The cost is 1300 Euro for a week (sleeping 4 comfortably, and 6 if you use the sofa bed).

    Floods at Aqua Alta!

Unique Qualities: The garden at the rear was lovely. We ate out there for every breakfast, some dinners and sat there in the late evenings too, drinking cheap wine from the Bodega down the street!
    Absolute bliss!

  • Nice but quite small apartment just off the Strada Nova. It's got everything you need, including a 2 ring cooker, a microwave, TV, washer/dryer and shower room. It was very comfortable for 2, but I imagine that 4 would find it a bit cramped.

Unique Qualities: Another very nice apartment - and this one doesn't flood!
The cost is 670 Euro per week.

    Camping!: A Much Cheaper Option...

  • If your budget doesn't stretch to staying in Venice (try to if you can), then take a look at Lido De Jesolo or some of the other resorts along that strip. Jesolo especially caters for the cheaper end of the market, and is very popular with the younger crowd. It is also a lively nite spot, and youths from Venice travel there (rather than the other way round) for good evening entertainment!
We once stayed at the Hotel Kennedy, in Lido De Jesolo. It was good, cheap(ish), good food, own pool on the roof, private beach, etc. Don't know if it's still there.
There are LOADS of campsites around Treporti & Punta Sabbioni, and you can get the ferry from these two places straight into Venice (and it's only 3 Euro for the trip, or 5 for a return).

You have some amazing pictures and some really great information, much more than the usual tourist stuff. I envy the time you were able to spend to really get to know Venice... :)

Nice tips about Venice with some interesting facts. I was here on a school trip as a lad and got lost, hitched back to our camp site and fell asleep in our tent while the cops were scouring the canals with my school chums...Tim
