Go on, have a Cream Tea in St. Marks Square!
It's nice! Sandwiches, Scones, Cakes... and only 20 euro, but then add on another 7 for the "musica". If the band is not playing, you don't pay this extra. Don't worry to stay there a while - once you've payed you can stay as long as you like.

    ai Sportivi: Great Pizza

  • Restaurant Name: Pizzeria ai Spertivi

We first came here to meet our friends Sandy(smith) & Dave, it was their recommendation. It's a very pleasant little bar/pizzeria and a good place to while away some time. Later we came back on our own, and after a few beers we fancied a 'snack'. We though 'if we get ONE pizza, we can sneakily share it'. When they brought it though, it was already cut in 1/2 and was on two plates. I think the guys here might be psychic or something! Be careful about what you're thinking, OK :-)

Same as above, but by evening. The Pizza is some kind of goats cheese & ruccola creation. Very nice it was too :-)

Wanna eat somewhere 'special', with a great view and REALLY cheap food? Well, just at the foot of the Accademia bridge there is a little 'garden' that serves pizza margerita for only 5 euro, including service and covers (oh, I need to mention covers - see later).
Well, it's right by the Grand Canal, almost UNDER the Accademia Bridge. Great place for people (and boat) watching.

Favorite Dish: Pizza Margerita - it's all that they sell!

Great food, outdoor setting and resaonable prices. Oh, and friendly, helpful staff too.

Favorite Dish: OK, Venice is famous for seafood, but we're veggie so we don't eat seafood. But just so you know that you can get great seafood here, here's a pic of the meal our companions had (= seafood)

Just another view of some "typical" seafood dish from this restaurant on Strada Nova. See previous tip for more details.

Favorite Dish: 'Seafood platter' - A 'steak' from some big fish, some sort of whole fish, scallop, octopus, prawns...
Yuk. But I'm assured it was very nice.

    Pasticcerias etc.
In Italy (well, certainly in this part of Italy) there is something that we just don't see in England. In Bakeries and cake shops, there is often a small bar tucked away in one corner. This bar will serve everything from Espresso & Cappucino to wine, beer and hard spirits. It's standing room only, and you just buy your drink (and any cake that you might fancy to have with it) and eat and drink at the counter. It's customary to not stay too long. We'd often see a little old lady, just out getting her shopping, call into one of these places, get a small glass of wine, down it in one, and then be on her way again. Utterly charming.
    What can I say!

Favorite Dish: Wine & Cakes. Coffee & Cakes. Bellini & Cakes. Beer & Cakes.
Seriously, my favourite was a Bellini (the cocktail of Venice, made with Peach puree and Prosecco) with a cake that is a little like a Champagne Cork shaped sponge cake, soaked in some kind of liquer and filled with a custard cream. I have no idea what it is called, but most Pasticceria make them. To me it was simply 'Una Questa' ('one of those') :-)

Simply delicious, and not at all expensive, despite its proximity to St. Marks.

Nice tips about Venice with some interesting facts. I was here on a school trip as a lad and got lost, hitched back to our camp site and fell asleep in our tent while the cops were scouring the canals with my school chums...Tim
