    • The Alpine ski resort of Chamonix is only 2 1/2 hours from Annecy by train (including a change of train at St. Gervais Les Bains Le Fayet). It's a good place for a day trip in the summer.

    • and also by Funicular railway. This railway takes you up to the Mont Blanc glacier.

    • Here is the glacier. If you make this trip take a coat even in summer, it's a little chilly. From the end station you can make hiking trips into the mounatin, including ones on the glacier itself (proper clothing/equipment required).

    • You can also go down to the glacier and visit the slightly 'tacky' tourist trap of the Ice Caves. Inside are sculptures carved in ice. It's OK, but it is a long walk down and back up again, so if you are old, infirm or unfit think carefully about making this trip.

    • Geneva in Switzerland is only 2 1/2 hours from Annecy by train, incuding a change at Aix Les Bains (which is a nice Spa town in it's own right).

     Steve,its been mint looking at your pages,please keep at it.I went to Annecy with the school in 1976,have no photos so yours have triggerd fond memories..of cable car rides,swimming in the lake&a trip to the UN building in Geneva...Cheers...Dave :-)    		Annebl Fri Jan 9, 2004 15:10 UTC
