Alsace has had a chequered past. Tucked away as it is in the north east corner of France, separated from Germany by The Rhine, it's ownership has been the subject of much dispute over the centuries.
Alsace, with Stasbourg as it's regional capital, has changed hands many times over these centuries, most recently, of course, during WWII. This has led to the whole region have a distincly unique character, both in architecture and in cuisine!
Maybe because of it's troubled past, Strasbourg wa chosen as the HQ of The Council Of Europe and then later as the permanent HQ of The European Parliament and The European Court Of Human Rights.
With it's mix of French and German cultures, it's leading role in the EU and it's Universities, Strasbourg is a very cosmopolitan and lively city, but without being "stuffy" or overwhelmed by it bureaucratic role.
I had never really considered it as a holiday destination until I chanced on some pictures in a magazine and then researched the area further on VT. KatyW's page on Alsace sealed the decision for us, and so we came to Strasbourg and Alsace, for what has proved to be one of our favourite holidays. |

You must be a professional photographer. Is Strasbourg quintessentially French, by the way? | dinhyen Wed May 28, 2003 05:30 UTC Intriguing gastronomic adventures. Now I'll have to try the bibelskaas to find out for myself. Splendid photographs and useful tips. |
