We flew from Antigua to Flores, in the Peten Department. We had arranged for a van to take us to the Hotel Tikal Inn. I got up early the next morning and entered the park at 6am to catch the sun rising over the temples. What a spectacular place! It was hot and muggy even at that time of the morning but the ruins were so awe inspiring that I was not concerned with the heat. This place is hugh...6 square miles have been excavated revealing over 3100 separate structures: temples, ceremonial platforms, housing, sports courts, palaces, and even a structure built for sweatbaths! Over 100,000 tools have been recovered. Be sure and take at least a day and hire a guide. We used a young fellow from Flores, who not only spoke perfect English, but was a walking encyclopedia on Tikal! |
| Temple I known as the Jaguar Temple |
| | The Jaguar Temple The Jaguar Temple best exemplifies the Mayan architecture of Tikal. Built around 700 AD, this tower stands about 145 Feet above the Central Plaza. The huge pyramidal base with its 9 sloping terraces supports first a building platform which in turn supports the sacred temple of 3 rooms at the top. |
| | View from the Top of the Temple of Masks Yes, I made it to the top of Temple II or the Temple of Masks. This one is 125 feet tall and is positioned directly across from Temple I as seen behind me. |
