Located on the border between France and Germany in the Alsace region, it has its own unique architecture as well as many cathedrals. It was also part of Germany from 1870 to 1918, although today the city is largely French is very few people still use German as their native language. It is the headquarters of the Council of Europe and also is one of the locations for the European parliament. Most of the sights are on the centre island, which is surrounded by the River Ell.
