Lidköping history

Lidköping is a beautiful little town of around 25.000 inhabitants at the province of Västra Götaland in Western Sweden. The town lies at the estuary of the river Lidan which empties into lake Vänern, Europe's 3rd biggest lake and the continent's largest resource of drinking water. West of the town you will find the magnificent peninsula of Kålland, the island of Kållandsö and Ekens skerries. Lidköping got its charter on July 21, 1446 and the city arms are almost as old. The design has varied throughout the centuries, but has always depicted a seated bishop. Around 1650, Lidköping got incorporated into the countship of Jakob De la Gardie. However, in 1655 the crown decided to reclaim stewardship of the town. To make up the loss, De la Gardie was then given the right to found a new town on the Western side of the river. In 1672 the foundations were laid, and the new town grew rather quickly. In 1683, both sides of Lidköping were unified by the Crown, which also reassumed possession of the complete area then. Huge parts of the town, on both sides of the river, were destroyed in a huge fire in 1849 but reconstruction started almost immediately. Today Lidköping is working hard to market itself as "Lidköping vid Vänern" to distinguish itself from the namewise (and historically) similar city of Linköping.

Läckö-Kinnekulle Peninsula

The municipality of Lidköping is, together with its Western neighbour Götene, located at the Läckö-Kinnekulle peninsula. Lidköping is a perfect starting point to many of this area's fascinating sites like: Läckö Castle, Hellekis gardens, Kinnekulle mountain, Ekens skerries, Spiken fishing village, Halle- & Hunneberg nature reserve (famous Royal elk hunting territory), ... In the municipality of Lidköping you will also find countless anciet sites, such as: rune stones, burial mounds, rock carvings, stone circles & settings and passage graves. The area is famous among hikers, offers a great variety of water sports and is famous for its fishing grounds and wildlife.

Soul mates

A stroke of good fortune made me get to know 2 Lidköping inhabitants that turned out to become extremely good friends of mine. We are in permanent (email and icq) contact and do meet at least 6 times a year. Back in April we've spent a 10 days Wales holiday together, we also travel to events like concerts and festivals together and always have lots of fun.
