The Old Town of Dinkelsbühl is surrounded by one of the most impressive and best preserved medieval town wall that you will find in Germany or even in Europe. It has got an overall length of around 2,5 km and includes 4 huge gates and 16 towers! For defensive reasons the town walls were built roughly circular and, until today, the townscape of Dinkelsbühl is shaped and influenced by this specific action. The formidable city gates were built overtopping all the other buildings of the original town (except for St. George's minster, of course).
The extraordinarily good conditions of the town walls are partly owed to King Ludwig I who, already in 1826, issued a decree prohibiting demolition of both city gates and walls. Protection of historical buildings and monuments has ever since been pushed in Dinkelsbühl. The town has also been exceptionally lucky during the 20th century wars. And these are the reasons why today we can admire this outstanding ensemble!
