The largest arab medina in the world | The large crossroad at the end of tala kbira |
Yes, Fes has the largest medina of them all. Having seen many medinas around the world this is something different. If you want to see the real medina head for Fes. It is incomparable to medinas of Jerusalem,Tunis or Cairo or even Marrakesh. It has not only several thousand small and larger streets and alleys but large parts are covered, streets are not strait and parts of the medina close after 9 pm or so,so make sure you get back to your hotel and do not wander in the depths of the medina. |
| | Qarawiyin mosque and university This is the oldest university in the world dating back to the 9th century more than century older than the rival azhar university in cairo and centuries older than the oldest in europe. The only down side for non muslims is that one can hardly appreciate it as it is hard to see anything from the outside. On the picture is the entrance to the Qarawiyin library. |
| | For those seeking the modernity Fes has roughly three parts. The oldest is the medina,to the west is the new fes which is 700 years old with jewish quarter and more to the west is the new town with nice mc donalds restaurant just at the entrance. On the photo is the large roundabout which separates the new town from the new and old fes. |
