Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, The Bronx, Staten Island – the five wonderful boroughs of New York.
My family lived in Queens for about 16 years after coming to America, my father has lived in Brooklyn for a long period of time, my brother lived in Staten Island for some time and I now live in Manhattan –Someone in my family needs to make their way to the Bronx to make it complete.
New York is home to the wonderful New York Yankees and the Mets (Go Yanks!). Even if you don’t like sports you must be a fan of one or the other. We have wonderful sports all year round, great concerts that are not hard to go to, activities are endless, restaurants are wonderful, nightlife can be unforgettable, and no matter who you are –you will fit in.
Traveling in New York City is extremely convenient with the metro system, busses, and ferries. There are over 10,000 yellow cabs that service Manhattan and most of them are very helpful. It’s always easier to take the Subway to avoid all traffic on the ground (it can be bumper to bumper at times), but in the summer it can be very HOT in the train station. Taxi fares change constantly, but the initial fare is $2.50 so make sure you’re not taking a two block cab ride. Taking the train is always the easiest and fastest.
The subway can take you to almost every attraction in New York City, so take advantage (your metro card has an automatic transfer for several hours). You can take the train to Queens, Brooklyn, or the Bronx, but not Staten Island –you would need to take a free ferry for that (which I highly recommend to take the ferry back and forth for the wonderful view).
The best way to find out what’s happening at what time is to visit either http://www.newyorker.com/ or http://www.citysearch.com/ or just Google it , of course. |

| | My Happy Place This is my favorite place in central park. I spend many days here just reading or doing absolutely nothing. Love it! |

Nemorino Tue Aug 18, 2009 19:55 UTC Your tips bring back memories of the four years I spent in New York as a student (quite some time ago). I've never been to Hoboken, though. My father entered the US through Ellis Island in January 1928, so that makes me part of the 40% you mentioned. | BillNJ Sat Mar 21, 2009 01:05 UTC Nice page on NYC. But nowhere can you drive LEFT on a red light! (most places allow you to turn RIGHT on red). | saccharinicity Fri Jul 18, 2008 19:33 UTC great ny sushi tips...i have been looking for some good places to try. i went to ten sushi in midtown last week and the rolls were so small i thought they had given me peanuts instead. :) BYOB sounds GREAT! | Lhenne1 Mon Jun 2, 2008 19:07 UTC I LOVE your tourist trap tip...so true!
