Marseilles - city of Provence

The city has an often-deserved reputation of being dangerous to travellers. Best keep on your toes at all times, especially around the main train station and there are areas in which you would not be advised to walk around after dark, especially if you are a woman. The surrounding coast and offshore islands are worth a look. Plenty of bars and restaurants of all standards, with the emphasis on the local seafood produce. Pricey beer in the bars - much cheaper in the supermarkets. One side of the three-sided Vieux Port is quieter - the other two sides are noisy traffic madness. If you speak at least a bit of french, most people are friendly. Watch out for counterfeit money, dog faeces and opportunist thieves.. and if you're a woman, be very careful if you go anywhere on your own. Don't mess with the local police: behind their smiling faces, they're infamous for intimidation and thuggery when "the camera is off".

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:Some areas of the Vieux Port. The islands of Frioul. The calanques.
  • Cons:Noisy 24/7 traffic in some areas. Dog faeces. Some areas are no-go after dark.
