"Hidden Gems in the Outback" Natural Bridges National Monument by BruceDunning

A Pocket of Adventure Seeking

This area is not frequently traveled and that is good in my opinion. In fact it is a bit desolate on some of the back roads. Those roads also can raise havoc on a vehicle for driving down rough and rugged lanes.
Natural Bridges was fist a park in 1908. It was discovered by Cass Hite in 1883 while prospecting in the area.

San Juan Basin Shows Nature Phoenomina

This part of the territory has the most twisting and carved out canyon turns in the world. It is like being in another planet in seeing the works of the water. The actual happening to create this is the ground gradually rose up over millions of years and the river stayed the same but continued to carve a path through the new rock. That now has led to the deep canyons.

Moqui Dugway

This is a State highway called UT261. This name derived from Mormons calling it after the name for Pueblo Indians-Moquies (Spanish word) We also call it Moki Dugway. The road has many switchbacks and turns hanging right at he edge of the cliffs. It ascends/descends 1200 feet in the trek for 3 miles on gravel graded section, with a steep 11% slope.

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:Wonderful pristine sites not visited as much
  • Cons:Long loop drive to get around end to end-90 miles
  • In a nutshell:Many of the back roads are rough on a regular vehicle

Natural Bridges National Monument looks like an amazing place to visit! You managed some spectacular photos of these various natural wonders. Those dwellings do look like great defensive positions! Thanks for the historical info and the tour as well!

very nice page, great pictures. The landscape is incredible. My parents lived in Blanding in 1938 for two years, often described how beautiful ( and isolated ) it was.

Awesome trek. We missed this the last two times out there. Valley of the Gods sounds like a RedRover road to me. Thanks for the great tips.
