There is 275 miles of desert in the Tulsrosa Basin, as it is called. It was caused by gypsum sands being created and drifting. The visitor center is 8 miles into the dunes, and there are 4 main trails one can take to hike. Located 50 miles northeast of Las Cruses, or past Alamogordo from the north and Carlsbad on Hwy 82. |

| Pros: | "Solitude is the theme here" | | Cons: | "When you see the sand, then what does a tourist do?" | | In A Nutshell: | "A bit to get to here, and you need to like desolation" |
