Keep Growing the Trees

The state has the reputation for trees and the lumber industry has been the backbone for decades to centuries. Driving even along the coast, there are great views of the foilage and you get a "clean" feel of being out in nature; at least I did.

Working Town Converted to Tourism

This city is still very much a place to work, and they have a number of businesses downtown. What has been added is the tourism aspect. The wharf edge and some interior streets feature the Portland landscape and its relationship to the water. The shops and restaurants are for the tourists to take leisure, and buy.

Lighthouses Still in Use for Safety

Lighthouses are scattered along the coast, and many people make a specific venture in seeking them out and comparing to the others. There are about 2,000 along the east coast, and Maine has its share, and some of the more photographed and picturesque.

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:Good scenery around the city
  • Cons:Downtown does not hold a lot unless you shop or eat
  • In a nutshell:It is a rather mundane city that is promoting tourism

Yuk! I hope you are able to find a better place to stay the next time you go up into that area. It has been a very long time since I visited that part of the world.

Thanx for your page! I like Longfellow's poetry! "Voices of the Night", etc.
