A SAd Tale

One of the travesties our government did was destroy the lifestyle of Cherokees living in north Georgia. This is only 70 miles from Atlanta. The tribe people began to adapt to the American way of life and had around 10,000 living in the north territory. They learned the English language, learned to farm and assimiliated into society. The area we visited was the core of life for the main body of the people, who even had their own village with all the amenities. This village has a blacksmith shop, cloth shop, metal working, etc to tour. It has an impact that shows these so called "savages" were real people and tried to learn our ways. Wish that happened now
The government decided in late 1800's to move them all to Oklahoma for "their own good" and they were part of Trail of Tears. Many died, and some were imprisoned and later executed. Some history, HUH!

Not much left to remember

This are is overall rather desolate, with only a handful of homes left and shops that were used as when a village of active people existed here. The area was farmed and corn was the main staple for Cherokees.
John Ross and Major Ridge, both influenced out Government in late 1700's to allow peaceful coexistence. They began spinning cotton and growing their own crops. The encroachment of American settlers in early 1800's changed that lifestyle. A treaty to allow residence was broken and in 1832 the movement was underway to relocate 16,000 Cherokee to the West. By 1836 they were gone and you may know the tale of the lone wlak, with many dying along the way.
