Eight Flags reigned over Here

The town is called Isle of 8 Flags because starting with the French in 1562, which founded the town, it changed over to Spanish after a battle in 1565, and a mission was established in 1573. From there the British got possession in 1763 from a treaty with Spain, then after the Revolutionary WAr, USA let it go back to the Spaniards. That did not last long, and US took control in 1812, then Spain again, then Mexico, and then Confederates, and ultimately US again and finally.

Historic homes Abound

This is one of the largest historic districts in US. It encompasses nearly 25600 acres, that was dedicated from 1973-87. That now means that ownders have to meet standards to keep the buildings as they should look form the old era.

Beaches are the Main Feature

They have beaches all along the ocean side of Fernandina/Amelia Island. They white sand beaches run the length of the island that spans about 10 miles. The main beach is at Fletcher Ave near old downtown and at Atlantic Ave.

Hi Bruce, I had never heard about this place before, but I enjoyed your page very much. I most like the beautiful architecture, and the marshes in Roosevelt Park!
