Region map showing Sedona nucleus

The town of Sedona was unknown to the majority of the public until town things came to town' artists and vortex consultants. Vortex means "spiral of energy swirls", and accentuates your feelings; good or bad. These are the core of the main draw today. In fact, vortex has validity and the Indians feel the aura of it throughout the centuries. Indians believe in 9 stages of finite life, and we are entering the 4th-involving fire, ice, air, and start of destruction from 2012-2105. This world is to end by armeggedon in 2015 in 5th world. Now there are four of the main blocks that you can walk shop to shop, and also finds eats. Besides that is West Sedona, which is a string of chain fast food restaurants, and places to stay, and shopping centers. There is also the vortex that is following the Indians belief of healing through magical powers unseen, but felt. Watch where you go and to whom. There are "want to be's" in the business to make you feel fleeced, not healed, and recently two died in a sweat lodge and 19 others got sick. Sweat lodges can have magical leaders go through up to 8 hour chants while you sit on a sand etch piece of art to get the bad evil out

History of the town

The Sinagua Indains farmed and hunted in this canyon/valley for centuries. Then came the American settlers around 1870's. J.J. Thompson was one of the first to come and he claimed land rights (as in squatter) to the north of Sedona along the Oak Creek. Along came a stage coach station to the south and that brought more settlers. Sedona is named after a wife of a settler called T.C. Schnebley who bought an 80 acres site in 1902. He grew fruit and took it to Flagstaff, a fledgling town itself back then. It was a Post Office and goods store in 1902.
The town began to grow when in 1965, a group of people claimed it to became an artist sanctuary. Nafando Brown from Egypt became a known artist that then drew in others to set up shop in 1962. Since then the town pushed for growth, and they got it big time, with all the city hassles to boot

Large expanse of Red Rock Region

Territory set out to be called Red Rock Country. The town is at 4500 feet elevation. This is an area loosely designated to be for people to come and drive, hike or enjoy the scenery, and a lot of it has fees attached. It is administered by the National Forest Service. Sedona has some special involvement to some areas, like Red Rock Loop. That is a State park and they charge an extra $8 to use the hiking trails, or stop by for a visit. That is on top of the $5 to be in the Forest Service area, unless you have a national park pass.
Sedona gets 4 million annual visitors _WOW_ a year and has only 11,000 residents.

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:Nice place to take a slow approach to enjoy
  • Cons:Traffic and tourists are maddening-too much La la land
  • In a nutshell:I enjoyed one trip here to see it, but would not return

Nice tips for the Sedona area. Seeing that I also have the Senior Life Time pass, I already have enjoyed many National Parks via the pass. I believe the exciting way to go would be the Jeep tour. :-)

This really is a wonderful region - but I wonder when they will start to charge you for the air you are breathing.Lucky me I was there before they ripped off everyone, and there wasn't a lot of traffic. But as we see, things do change dramatically. Sissi

Fortunately my American relatives displayed their Pass - what a fantastic Deal that is!! We used the free shuttle too. I tend to share your view of Sedona - lovely were it not over run by the trappings of tourism - but glad we went there all the same.

Great tips Bruce. I didn't like the new turnabouts one bit! Yet, we enjoy Sedona every time we visit. Nice page!

Superb landscapes but it is sad that it is so touristy! Wow, a lifetime pass for seniors, that is great!

Sedona is stunning isn't it!! But I find it a little sad that it has become even more commercialized than ever and those roundabouts - what's up with that??
