This is truly a bedroom community and transient people and snowbirds flock to here because of the cheap living. There is no style, or elegance to be found in this town. It has allowed mobile homes to take over, and I do not recall seeing any actual residential home in the town.
It has a population of about 40,000, and my guess is 80% would be retired snowbirds from the north, either living here year round, or coming for 3-6 months.
Called the Wilderness territory, no roads go through the large preserved area. Access is form the fringes, and the overall length of the range is about 40 miles long and 30 miles high.
They try to welcome the tourist type, but suspect most business comes from those who live there. There are not any tourist type things to see/do in the town itself. There are some things out on Hwy 188 in the Superstition Mountain area, and toward Tortilla Flat; about 25 miles away.
- Pros:Easy Driving Arounf town on Way to Superstition Mtn
- Cons:Low end place to live and visit-mobile home & liquor store
- In a nutshell:This is the epitamy of what happens without zoning

I have enjoyed reading about this area. The scenery looks great! Your tips would be a great help to people travelling here.
Wow, those cholla stick are prickly for sure. Experienced one of those..ouch! Cool treasure map! The museum and views look excellent. Nice page!
I've got a couple of "snowbird" cousins from Michigan that live in Apache Junction - I haven't been there ...........yet!
Looks like the area surrounding the town has some nice scenery, boxed houses or no.
The back country is pretty rugged...and certainly beautiful. Another vT'er was driving through the Superstition Mountains area this week and it was the first Ive heard of them. The crusher at the museum is quite the piece of machinery isnt it!!
