Mary's church | St. Mary's church-Mariacki |
This is a reknowned church for its wood carved relief at the alter. It is huge at probably 30 feet height and 50 feet in length, once the panels are opened out. It was built by Viet (Wit) Stowosz in 1600's. The church also has a trumpeter hourly playing an abrupt piece on the theory he was shot with an arrow through the neck while warning townfolk of attack by Tartar's. The church is 262 feet tall |
| | Wawel castle This is one big complex and has many parts. A large courtyard, a great church and side buildings. Started in 1038, it continued to expand through 16th century before the capital moved to Warsaw. The area here was settled in Stone Age. The Piast dynasty ruled for years, but the Tartars continued to show up to destroy and pillage the town in 1200's. The town name came from Krakus, who was the founder. The city was a cultural cewnter for trade during the 12th century, and made it wealthy. It was a strong Pole tribe that ruled the territory, the Tatars destroyed nearly all in 1241, but in 1700's it was taken over by Russians, and Habsburgs. The city is laid out in a grid pattern. Since then until 1989, someone always seemed to rule the country and this thriving city. |

balhannah Mon Sep 28, 2009 11:41 UTC Plenty of sites of interest here. I agree with you, those tours are terrible when they take you to the souvenir places and expect you to buy. They must think that is all we go on holiday for! | yumyum Tue Aug 25, 2009 20:00 UTC I spent a week in and around Krakow in July and really liked it! | Aitana Wed Aug 19, 2009 20:20 UTC Hi Bruce, thank you for visiting my Galicia page. Nice tips of Krakow, I liked very much this city. | Andrew_W_K Thu Aug 6, 2009 08:13 UTC Thanks for stopping by my Bridgnorth page. Great Krakow pages will revisit before I go. Yes, we have gangsters here as well - they are called bankers! |
