The Romans started the activity for the town in the 4th century by buiilding an outpost. The first derivitive of the name comes from :over the bridge" or over the Inn river, and then called Oenus. It later changed the name and became the capital of Tirol region (one of the best beauties in Europe) in 1429. Maximilian I made this a center in 1490's. The town is/was a point to pass through the Alps by going through Brenn Pass which is 30 km south of town.
This detail map shows the number of buildgs and sites to be able to view. The area is not very large, but holds a lot of interesting buildings and architecture. it was the capital of Tyrol region and Maximillian used as his headquarters in 1490.
A mix of Gothic, Baroque and Rococco styles, it was last modified by Maria Theresa in 1754. The orginal palace was built in 1460 for Archduke Siegmund the Rich. The Hapsburgs ruled here for six centuries. it is now a museum with a lot of Hapsburg portraits and antiquities inside. Price of a ticket is 5.50 Euro and is open 9-5
- Pros:We like the town layout and things to see while strolling
- Cons:Stay away from tourists in summer-especially golden roof
- In a nutshell:This is one of the most quaint and Alpine feelings

Its nice to see Innsbruck through your eyes, Bruce, thanks for sharing !
Thanks to your page, I now know there is more to Innsbruck than people skiing! It looks far more interesting than I had imagined.
Last time I passed by the city, I have visited an interesting exhibition on sexuality from the Netherlands. Thanks for the Balatonszarszo ratings. Best. L.
Glad you enjoyed your visit to Innsbruck. I was also there in August, but a year later, in 2006.
A lovely little town and it tokk us a couple of hours and a trips to get a pic of the Goldenes Dachl with place crawling with tourists in peak summer!
Another town I love!
Saw what was meant to be the "world's smallest shop" in Vancouver. Looking at the one in the photo, I wonder if it is! I love those gardens, you make me want to visit!
The Rive Inn looks marvelous and that little building stuck in between is a hoot. Nice page!
