"Scotland's Jewel" Edinburgh by slothtraveller

It may not be the largest city in Scotland, but it definitely is the most picturesque. Edinburgh is a must-see city on an itinerary of the UK, thanks in no small part to its extraordinary castle and the bustling Royal Mile where the sound of bagpipes is never far away!
Edinburgh's cultural appeal makes it an expensive place to visit, especially during the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and the New Year Hogmanay celebrations so be sure to book your accommodation if you visit at these times!
I visited this fantastic city for 3 nights in February 2012 before moving on to the larger, but less aesthetically pleasing city of Glasgow. I visited with my sister who had visited before and knew many of the best places to see. The highlight of the trip for me was visiting Edinburgh Castle which is definitely one of the best castles I have visited in the UK. A close second was climbing up Calton Hill and taking in the wonderful views of Edinburgh from above. I hope to visit Edinburgh again and I hope it does not lose its charm over time.
SO WOULD I VISIT AGAIN?
Yes, I definitely would. This city is one that I couldn't get bored with.
- Pros:Historically and architecturally rich, stunning castle, beautiful scenery
- Cons:City on two levels can be confusing, steep steps and roads
- In a nutshell:A lively, fun city that will keep everyone entertained!

Hi Steve. Thanks for your visit to my pages, I do appreciate your comments. I haven't been back to visit the UK in many moons. It seems we both have a great enjoyment of castles and museums:) Edinburgh castle looks excellent. Did you get to see some of the old edinburgh,we had a show here in the States that was talking about a part of the city that today is basically underground, tunnels networks etc. Nicely done descriptions and some good photos. Thanks for the tour! Regards from Maryland
Hi Val and many thanks for visiting my Edinburgh page. There were a few tour guides operating ghost tours of the tunnels you are talking about. I didn't take them up as I was travelling with my sister and I think she would have found the experience a bit too claustrophobic! If I returned on my own, I would definitely check them out! Kind regards to you from rainy England.
Love your Edinburgh page - my family comes from near there. Last there in 1998 - oops! too long ago!
Hi Steve, a nice page about Edinburgh! I agree with many of your thoughts about it! It was interesting to read about the police boxes, I did not see any of them, but maybe I saw some and just did not notice because I didn't know what they are!
I am going back to Edinburgh in the end of this month and your page really got me back in the mood :-)
Thanks for visiting my Ohrid page, Steve! Macedonia was fantastic - very picturesque with friendly locals, good food and sunny weather! :-)
Great Edinburgh page you've built here! The Beehive sounds like a nice traditional pub - and even better if it serves Indian food! I should make a trip to the Scottish capital some day soon!
I’m glad you enjoyed your visit to Edinburgh Castle, even though they have jacked up the prices so much in recent years. Good that the National Museum is still free.
Steve, lovely little page about Edinburgh, which I once visited during the Edinburgh Festival about 15 years ago.
:) These Police Boxes remind me of Doctor Who.
Edinburgh looks beautiful!
