Scotland's largest city, Glasgow has long been seen as a poor relation of the Scottish capital, Edinburgh. Many people associate the city with negative things such as social deprivation, drunkenness, rough neighbourhoods and perhaps worst of all, the deep-fried Mars bar. It would be incorrect to say that those things still don't exist in Glasgow because they do. Nowadays though, the city does seem to be making an effort to assert a new identity. It knows it cannot compete with neighbouring Edinburgh when it comes to picturesque beauty, but Glasgow is starting to establish itself as a city going places. From the bustling shopping areas of Buchanan and Sauchiehall streets to the redeveloped Merchants City area, Glasgow is investing heavily in its future- billing itself as 'Scotland with style'.
I'd been to Glasgow previously for a job interview (I didn't get it! :P), so when the opportunity came around in February 2012 to visit again and see more of the city, I took it. We decided to spend three nights in Edinburgh then get the train to Glasgow and stay for two nights before making our way back home.
There are lots of reasons to come to Glasgow. Firstly there is the shopping which is second only to London in the UK. The city also has a thriving pub scene and some good theatres and cinemas. There are also more sightseeing opportunities than you might expect. Check out some of my tips for inspiration!
IS IT WORTH A RETURN VISIT?
I'd say so, but I'd use it as a base to visit some of the Scottish Highlands and lochs. :D
- Pros:Great shopping, museums and restaurants.
- Cons:Weather usually appalling, going out in Glasgow of an evening can be an eyeopener.
- In a nutshell:A gritty city carving its own niche.

Steve, lovely little page about Glasgow here. I once visited the city around 15 years ago; I don't think they had deep-fried Mars bars there already. *winkygrin*
Very good intro written here! I visited Glasgow as a day trip from Edinburgh and my feelings were the same as yours. It is of course not as pretty as Edinburgh, but it still does have so many things to see, and I definitely plan to return as during one day I could only see a fraction of it!
The Hunterian Museum sounds very interesting, but I am not sure if I want to see all those dead bits and pieces ;-)
Never having been there, I do tend to associate Glasgow with deep-fried Mars bars. But from your tips and photos I'm glad to see there are other sides to Glasgow as well.
