Our Own Dilli

by Rupanworld - last update: Jan 21, 2009

Delhi (often referred to as Dilli in Indian languages) is the largest metropolitan city in India in terms of area (approx 1480 square kilometers) and the third largest in terms of population (approx 12 million people) after Mumbai and Kolkata. It is also one of the oldest existing cities of the world like Damascus and Varanasi and is believed to be 5000 years old. It is believed that during these 5 millenia, it has been constructed and destroyed and reconstructed 11 times. Delhi has mention in the longest Epic of the world, the Mahabharata, as Indraprastha. It is also one of the oldest country capitals of the world. It is the capital city of world's largest democracy. It has a golden past and has for most part in history served as India's capital, or the kingdom of most of its rulers including the Mughal rulers. Only during the British period between 1772 and 1911, it was replaced by Calcutta (now Kolkata) as the capital of india. Delhi was the capital of the Mughal Empire in India from 1649 to 1857. History reveals that Delhi has been inhabited since the 6th century BC, standing testimony to the twists and turns of history for 2600 years.

Delhi has always been a major hub of political, cultural and commercial happenings in India. Because of its long history, it has many ancient and medieval monuments, archaeological sites and important remains. Delhi is an independent state in India from 1992 onwards and has its own Legislative Assembly (although as per VT, it still is a Union Territory governed by the Union Government). Delhi is situated on the banks of river Yamuna and has a number of monuments, archaeological sites and remains from the past. Being the capital of the country as well as a highly commercialised and industrial area, it also has a number of important offices and industries as well as the Parliament of India and the President's palace.
