Train from Brussels to Brugge After a morning walk in Brussels, a stop at the men’s barber/spa, and a hearty Belgium breakfast, I got cleaned up and hopped a train for the 50-minute ride to the quaint little village of Brugge. Upon arriving at the train station there, I see about 300+ bicycles parked all over in racks. I figure that they must be all the work commuters to other cities. I think a good plan for the future would be to train into Brugge, rent a bike, and use that to get around this beautiful little place.
While here I learn that there are 27 bridges, 25,000 residents, and 9 churches in this little historic village – See, I did listen to the narrator on the canal boat tour. The whole place is intertwined with very serene canals, parks, and walking paths. The main streets have houses with pretty lace curtains and flower boxes, and again there are many lace shops, chocolate shops and outdoor cafes. The tourists were everywhere and the horse drawn carriages wandering through the streets with the drivers dressed in old time costumes are such a nice touch. I took a tour canal boat ride and when it went past a 13th Century old monastery, the narrator in his English version states: “today, there are 20 Benedictine nuns and several old ladies living there”. I love the translations in all of the countries.
I wound up my visit in Brugge with an outdoor Panini baguette, ‘Belgian soup’ and a recommended popular local brew called “Straffe Hendtik” (Half Moon). The early evening train ride back to Brussels was relaxing and without incident. |

| | The next morning after a breakfast of a freshly baked / warm ‘appelflap’ and a ‘chocobroodje’ along with my cappuccino; I took the train out to the Luchthaven (airport) for my discount $99 flight to the UK where I was to meet up with my flight back to the States. Now in Brussels of all places, my luggage raises an overweight “excess kilo” notice, and with the airport taxes and excess kilo penalty, my discount flight now costs an additional $93. So be it. |

| | Belgian airline “SN Brussels”: A note on the Belgian airline “SN Brussels”: Except for the self induced ‘excess kilo’ issue, of all the flights we have had, this airline surprisingly was the best! I had big leather seats, wider & with more leg room than any other flights. After the meal service, they served chocolates (no surprise), and they had large textured napkins, and of course the prettiest / most polite and blonde flight attendants of them all. |
