LONDON STOPOVER

by edwis - last update: Apr 24, 2008

In June, 2003, after visiting Croatia

at end of trip, had to use REGULAR CAMERA PHOTOS// NOT DIGITAL// SO ONLY HAVE FEW SITES AVAILABLE. SAD STORY

we had our return flight to the States coming out of London. We were able to spend 2 days there for our first visit.

Generally we liked it but certainly found it to be pricey. But because of the conversion of pounds to dollars, We never realized how costly until I was doing my accounting on the long flight back, and again when the credit card bills came.

We stayed at the Morgan - Bloomsbury Hotel
on Bloomsbury St, which was okay. We had a room on the top floor with no elevator (lift) and it was 90 degrees pulling the suitcases up step by step.

Location was good, walking distance to West End theater district and beyond.

We walked through Hyde Park which was wonderful;
saw the Serpentine Lake, walkways, bridges, nice flowers, some cute girls etc.

We ended up at the Kensington Palace, which now has a museum for Princess Diana. We enjoyed that which has collection of all her great outfits and hats.

Outside by the ornate gate was tons of flowers people left for her memory, years later they are still doing that.

The gardens there are great with good pathways and benches and well manicured bushes.

Leaving the Hyde Park, we came across the Albert Memorial which is cool.

Across the street is the Royal Albert famous concert hall. I think even the Beatles played there.

We walked a long way making our way over to Buckingham Palace, where the guard was changing and lotsa of pretty flowers in that area.

There is a series of parks that lead you over to Trafalgar Square, seeing the Nelson Tower,

and then finding St. Martins in the Field Church.

We had a great lunch in the historic Salisbury Pub, with nice cut and beveled glasswork.

One night we ate a street café with Indian food in some alleyway, which was very good but costly.

Then we went to a play at a theater.

I didn’t use a digital camera for this trip segment and thus have no photos to share here.

We took a train out of Victoria Station to the airport and

had to remember to “Mind the Gap”
