A 45-minute drive from the beach area going inland is Girona, the capital of Catalonia. The city center is walled, with narrow streets and buildings so close that the sun doesn’t penetrate, leaving the streets shrouded with shadows. We loved this place and explored the old cathedral, historic grounds and the old Jewish quarter.
Here we found a trendy little outdoor tapas café in a hidden plaza, where some young folks were sitting playing guitars and drinking wine. We got sucked right into this scene. The young waiter in a tee shirt told us the menu was in Catalonian, but he would “help” us. When we heard the word ‘chicken’ we nodded ‘si’. Joan got a plate of green whole tomatoes halved, topped with stripes of anchovies and oil. I received a wild green salad with cold tortellini mixed in. We thought that was the meal. Later they brought out two kebabs of grilled chicken, peppers and other assorted things unknown. The demi carafe turned into a full carafe and we had a great adventure. |
