we took a one-half hour train ride to Versailles. Of course, the train ride had a local Frenchman playing saxophone for coins. Versailles was Louis XIV’s royal complex, and was designed by him to highlight the supremacy of French power and culture. He certainly succeeded. We still can’t decide what is more impressive: the inside of the Chateau, with it’s famous Hall of Mirrors, or the outdoor grounds, with its formal gardens and lakes. We even walked about a mile over to Marie Antoinette’s estate, again marveling at the gardens and the interiors. Besides the Vatican in Rome, this was the only other place we’ve been to with such large crowds of tourists and tour buses and groups. In spite of the crowds, it was well worth it. |
