City of Culture

Chain Bridge
Budapest the capital of Hungary. In 2007 Budapest had 1,696,128 inhabitants. The two settlements Buda and Pest became a single city on the 17 November 1873, the right-bank (west) Buda and Óbuda (Old Buda) together with Pest on the left (east) bank.

The fist settlement call Aquincum was originally a Celtic settlement and is the direct ancestor of Budapest. When the Romans took over it was made the Roman capital of Lower Pannonia. Magyars arrived in the territory around 900. The Magyar settlement was attacked by the Mongols in 1241-42. The Town was re-established and became one of the global centres of culture in the 15th century. This was followed by 150 years of Ottoman rule. It became the second capital of Austria-Hungary Empire. The city was badly damaged in the 1944 Battle of Budapest and again in the Revolution of 1956.

My wife and I went to Budapest for the weekend and had a wonderful time we found the people the most friendly of all the people that we have met on all our travels.
