Arrival in Milan | Stazione Central (train station) |
I flew into the Milan airport (Malpensa) and took the Malpensa shuttle into the city. I had prebooked online so already had a voucher, just had to give to the driver. Nice big double decker bus, but crowded. The ride itself takes about 50 minutes and makes a couple stops in the city, but the majority of the people get off at the train station and go from there. The train station is huge, and the 3 main metro(underground subway) lines also converge here. |
| Milan's Duomo (still in the restortion process) |
| | The sights Milan was mostly just an arrival and departure city for me, but of course there are some great sights to see here too. First and foremost of course is the Doumo. Most people will take one of the underground metro lines to get there, as it lies right in the middle of the old part of the city, in a great piazza. What an astonishing sight, to walk up the steps from the underground metro stop, and BAM!! There is the huge Duomo right there in front of you in all it's gothic splendor. I spent time in the piazza around the Duomo, inside marveling at the amazing interior, and on the roof after climbing all the steps. What a view from up there. Seeing all the statues and the spires up close and personal from that vantage point was something else. |
| | Leonardo's Last Supper The other thing that I wanted to see while in Milan was Leonardo's Last Supper at the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie. I had prebooked tickets online for this 1-2 months before my trip. The church itself is not an ornate place like the Duomo, and has been rebuilt due to the WW2 bombing. But luckily the wall in the refrectory that held the fresco was not damaged. They allow groups of about 20 people in at a time for 15 minute intervals, and have the room maintained in a climate controlled environment. There are no pictures allowed. The wall with the fresco is really awe inspiring. It really does take your breath away. |
