Well I had always promised myself that I would someday return to Venice. They say if you throw a coin in the Trevi fountain in Rome you will return. I did that, 35 years ago! My how time flies. I made it back to Italy (minus Rome) and Venice was on the top of my list to see again. To be honest, it is pretty much as I remembered it. I guess when you're talking about a city that has been around for 1500 years, and a way of life for people that isn't much different, there wouldn't be that much that would change. I do think there are probably more tourists, and more commercialism, and definately prices are higher, but the heart and soul of Venice remains.
I truely think Venezia is a place that everyone should be lucky enough to see at least once in their lifetime. For me it has been twice, and I wouldn't hesitate to see it again.
I spent 3 days, and took hundreds of pictures. It was pointless to ever turn off my camera. Every time I turned a corner, walked over another bridge, or looked up...there was a great shot.
I am by no means a Venice expert, if you want to find tons of info and then some...check out Trekkie's page.
TrekkieBut I did miles and miles of walking, was in most of the districts, and enjoyed myself most when I wandered away from the crowds and went out in the early morning when only the garbage collectors and school children were up.
I might have answers to some of your questions, and I hope you will enjoy my photos.
