NOVALICHES: Is it FARview or FAIRview?

Its astronomical sounding name aptly describes what most especially people from Manila think of our place. As Microsoft Encarta 2007 defines NOVA as an explosion of a star in the far outer space that suddenly became visible to the naked eye. And now I am taking this great opportunity to briefly enlighten the minds of most about our town.

If you are a resident of Novaliches who have been used to its scenic green surroundings, this place is FAIR VIEW - "HOME sweet Home". But on a point of view of most Manilenyos(which is the majority), Novaliches is a very FAR VIEW. Actually, it is about 17 km northeast of Manila(close to 1 & 1/2 hour drive). But recent developments in road infrastructure (courtesy of our good Mayor SB) i.e. creation of new cemented alternative roads and Metro Rail Transit trains (MRT3) has made it possible to access conveniently our lovely town.

*Novaliches occupies a large part of Quezon City, one of the biggest cities in Metro Manila - the capital of the Philippines. The northern district is called Novaliches and is primarily residential. The La Mesa Dam Watershed occupies the eastern portion. The Dam supplies much of northern Metro Manila's water supply. Adjacent to the watershed is the La Mesa Eco-Park, where you can stroll and unwind at Metro Manila's only forest space.

Also located in the park are convention centers, picnic areas, swimming pools, an orchidarium, and a large lagoon for boating activities.
It was also the site of the rowing and dragon boat events for the SEA (South East Asian) Games. Rowing is regularly done here.

History of Novaliches

The name Novaliches probably came from the surname of a Spanish governor general, Marquis de Novaliches. The town was once part of Rizal province before being ceded to Quezon City in the 1940's. This district is among the largest in the city, having shared boundaries with the two sections of Caloocan City, Valenzuela City, San Jose del Monte City in Bulacan and Montalban, Rizal. The oldest part of the city is in the town center, aptly named Novaliches Bayan. But because of population growth the density of people gradually widened reaching up the edge of the La Mesa Reservoir (Lagro and Fairview).

In 1999, a plebiscite was held among the voters of Quezon City to determine the cityhood of Novaliches. The proposed creation of "Novaliches City" would have resulted in the secession of 15 barangays from Quezon City. At the plebiscite's end, votes that were against the separation heavily outnumbered those that were in favor.
