It shouldn't affect my opinion of Mainz, but the fact that it rained the day we were there does mar my memories of it a bit! We spent the afternoon there after checking into our hotel. We were using Mainz as a centre point for exploring the Rhine region. We only had time to visit the Cathedral and the Gutenberg Museum. The Cathedral wasn't bad, not as impressive as the Cologne Cathedral, but still worth a visit. The Gutenberg Museum would have been more interesting if we'd taken an English tour, as only a few exhibits were translated from German. Even the famous Gutenberg bibles didn't have any translations. The only reason we knew what they were was that they were in a separate room lit by special lights and a guy who spoke English was in front of us telling his friend about them. He had taken an English tour. I would give this museum a miss unless you speak German or if you join a tour in your language. All in all, Mainz was okay, but I'm glad we didn't spend much time there. It was nice walking along the riverfront, but as far as tourist sites, there wasn't much to do. |

Nemorino Tue Dec 11, 2007 09:04 UTC Too bad it rained so much when you were in Mainz. It's really nice when the sun shines, believe me. |
