Our last day in Rome, while on the Metro, we enjoyed watching an argument between two men -- an argument in Italian is always entertaining. We'd had a wonderful European cruise and were in Rome for our last day, leaving for home in the a.m. I grinned to my wife, saying, "Well, we survived 10 days in all the pickpocket cities and never saw any, hehe." We got off the packed subway (rush hour) and suddenly realized the argument could have been a diversion -- too late! My passport and cash were gone, both in my front jean pockets. These guys are professionals and you won't feel a thing. I had to stay an extra day in Rome and get a temp passport at the embassy ($97), find a place to stay for the night and hassle with two more subway rides and two city buses to get to a hotel near the airport. NEVER carry your passport around in foreign cities. Carry a photocopy if you must. Also, recommend carrying credit cards and cash in a neck purse that hangs around the neck and falls under your shirt/blouse.
