Diving in Greece can't really be compared to diving the coral reefs of Egypt. But that doesn't mean that people shouldn't try it! Diving in Greece isn't boring, it's just different than other places.

Greece is the first place that I've ever seen a live octopus and the only place I've seen more than one on a dive. It is also the only place where you can find seahorse after seahorse clinging to the grass just off the shore. You will also find an abundance of sea cucumbers and starfish (brittle and other). As you get shallow towards the end of the dive, watch the sand carefully for fish hiding and little hermit crabs scuttling around in abandoned shells.

Diving with Enalios in Leptokarya can be done from either shore or by zodiac. Going out on the zodiac does require more divers (at least 3-4) compared to shore dives.

Another good point about this certain location is that there is a nice beach with beach bar, sunbeds and thatched umbrellas for non-divers to enjoy. Enalios also runs a banana boat and waterskiing service :)

The shore diving isn't bad either but after a summer of diving the same area, I have to admit I like going out to what I've nicknamed "Pipe Dream" which is a submerged pipe thought to have been constructed by the Greek Army to fuel ships. It has since been abandoned and sunk to a maximum of 17 meters and houses all sorts of small fish, slugs, octopus, and other underwater creatures.

Dive guides use a marker bouy to alert boat traffic of the divers below. Most dives have a certified divemaster or divermaster-in-training for every 2-3 divers.

Finally, the staff at Enalios are a great group. They are very friendly and a lot of fun to dive with over the summer. In fact, if you come down to dive...you'll likely find me there on a Saturday or Sunday!

Equipment: You can rent all the equipment you need from Enalios Scuba. Their equipment is fairly new and internationally recognized brands such as Cressi.

Straying a bit from gear, lets talk about certification. Greece is a great place to get initially certified and get comfortable in the water. Why??? Well, the maximum depth on most of the shore diving is around 10-15 meters and that's if you are completely laying flat on the bottom. The underwater visibility is good most of the time except when the weather is stormy. The beaches are soft sand so entry and exit are fairly easy and quick.

A dive with equipment is between 25-30 Euros depending on whether or not full-equipment is required. Those with mask, fins, or other equipment will pay less. Just a dive will cost 20 Euros with tank & weights.

Waterskiing is a great summer sport and lots of fun with a group of friends.

Extreme Watersports offers waterskiing in Paralia in addition to banana and tube boats.

Waterskiing will set you back 20 Euros for around 15 minutes of skiing...or repeated failed attempts. The driver is patient and if you fall down, he'll swing the boat around to feed you the rope again to give it another try.

The best times to go waterskiing in Paralia are earlier in the morning, which needs to be arranged in advance because hardly anyone wakes up or opens their businesses before 10-11am, and the afternoon after 2pm. In the late morning and early afternoon, the sea gets a bit wavy which makes skiing more difficult. If you arrange to ski in the morning, lay out on the beach or go for banana rides until the seas calm down again in the afternoon.

Equipment: Just bring a bathing suit and towel! All the equipment is provided for you.

Skis are adjustable to different sizes. But ladies with small feet may have a hard time because the skis don't adjust down beyond 39-40. A life jacket is a must.

The boat is rockin'. You'll enjoy a 3000 Euro Kenwood sound system in the new boat that will make you feel like you are cruising in Miami :)
