I went to New York a few years ago. At the time, I thought I would aso be crossing over to Canada as I had a 8 day trip. But once I got into the rythem, I realsied that New York is it!!! I spent all my time in New york. An amazing place and I have great memories of the place. Luckily, I have some e mails that I sent to my friends at the time from the EASY internet Cafe on 42 Street. I will be posting extracts from that. |
| | Day 4 (extracts from e mails in May 2001) It was cloudy and around 15 degrees, and I was well dressed up for any calamity that might occur. Topping the bill was the Statue of Liberty so I took the subway and then the ferry to the statue. My next target was Ellis Island. Ellis Island was where thousands of ferries docked with millions of immigrants on board from the late 19 Century till the end of the second world war. This place acted as a immigration head quarter as well as home for the immigrants who came from all around the globe. Now in this place they have a museum which tells tales of the hardships and agony these migrants suffered in those days. Most of them travelling for 3 months coming from places like Liverpool and Antwerp. To give a good idea of those times we were also shown a black and white documentary narrated by Gene Hackman. After all this one has to spare a thought for those courageous people. My next stop was The World Trade Centre. By this time, I was under intermittent rain. I was though, undeterred in my course. Next though, was the Wall Street (stock Exchange) and the Trump Building. In the rain, I walked half way on to the Brooklyn Bridge and then came back going up towards City Hall Park. While I was in the area I carried on to Canal Street (China Town) and further up I found Little Italy. I am basically not a very meticulous person but I am totally different as a traveller. Soho (shopping Village) was next. I think I walked around for a couple of hours and came out with a couple of Armani's. So, the bottom portion of the map was done as I made my way back to Times Square. A movie that I missed in Holland because it was not subtitled in English was next. Ang Lee's "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" is a inspiring masterpiece, I must confess. Suffice to say, that now I am go straight towards my dorm and bed. Another day goes by and let's see what the new dawn has in store for me. |
Day 6 (extracts from e mails in May 2001) That's as far as I go. On this very last day, I planned to catch Les Miserables. I guess I was minutes too late as it was sold out. Disappointment was written all over my face and it was conspicous that my hopes had been shattered big time. I got myself together, as I was adament to see one last play. I glanced at the screen to evaluate my options. I then thought, Why don't I pay tribute to the Great Charlotte Bronte? So, I purchased a ticket for "Jane Eyre". For those of you who are not aware, Charlotte Bronte has been a legendary author and is considered to be in the same category as Charles Dicken's. Also, she came from a small town called Howorth, 5 miles east of Bradford, where I am destined to go in the near future. To commemorate her and her sisters, we have a 'Bronte Village" in Howorth. Last August while I was in the U.K I paid a visit to the place. So, it was nostalgia more than anything else, I reckon. The show itself was a cracker. As I say, there is no such thing as fair or good at Braodaway. Excellent, Brilliant or any other superlative in that category is the least guaranteed. I will probably catch "Les Misrable" during my next visit. Next, I have to pick my stuff up and take a subway to J.F.K. I am due on Swiss Air to Zurich and then onto Amsterdam.(connecting flight). I'll play a few games of chess, watch a couple of movies and before I know, I will be in Europe. A good friend of mine, and a coleague did the courtesy of reminding me that it was indeed a Swiss Air plane that went down a couple of years ago.(J.F.K to Zurich) Thanks very much for that. This surely will be a trip of a lifetime or maybe I might be entering a Cul-de-sac. Barring an unforseen catastrophe, I should be among you guys in a few days. Thanks you very much for bearing with me. I hope you enjoyed reading this as much as I enjoyed typing it. My sincere apologisefor I could not go into great depth due to a tight schedule, most of the time. Have a very nice weekend! As for me I have to play in a pool tournament final. (my first ever pool tournament) Thats all folks from Times Square New York!!!!!!!!! |
