Red Light District - What To Expect The Red Light District in Amsterdam is one of the major highlights and attractions that differentiates Amsterdam from other countries. Not only is the smell of weed profound but there are dozens upon dozens of stores that sell sex toys/outfits/accessories/souvenirs/pens/pencils/shirts/tops/panties - you name it, they have it. There are women dressed usually in bathing suits, on display in the storefront windows that are lit up with flourescent lights. It's my understanding prostitution is legal and prior to visiting Amsterdam I was told the women hung out of the doors and windows naked however, none were naked during my recent visit. The women were all attractive, had very nice shapes and were of of various ages, shapes, heights, and weight. Most of them were still-posing in the windows however, they didn't hesitate to open the door to have business discussions with any potential client and then resume their pose if the opportunity doesn't pan out. There are also venues that give live sex shows and have an admission fee. Individuals were lined up to attend the show. In fact, the line extended well over a block long. If you wanted to see the show -- you were in for a long wait. Not only do large crowds of men come out to explore the happenings of the district, but also many women and couples. The crowds are boisterous, intoxicated, high and sexually aroused. The crowd dynamics can be a little rowdy and perhaps a little intimidating because of the drinking, weed-smoking and sexual teasing. You wonder if anyone will break out in a wild rage or frenzy as sometimes happens with large crowds of people drinking and smoking. I'm told pot is legal in Amsterdam and the scent is quite thick in the air. There appeared to be at least 6-8 men per 1 woman and tons of men in large groups drinking, looking and enjoying themselves. Although there were no incidences during my visit, I would recommend a high level of caution just to be on the safe side.
While the tourist are amazed at what they find here, the locals ride around on bikes and check the happening's each night. There are plenty of straight women/men as well as gay women/men frequenting the Red Light District for their own personal reasons.
There were no nightclubs, supper clubs or jazz clubs in the Red Light area. Primarily you find sex shops, head shops and on the outskirts there are plenty of fast food places, pastry shops, restaraunts and endless bars. People hang out well past the 2 am timeframe and rarely do you see people with kids at/after dusk. It was a very interesting trip and definitely unique.
Pictures to follow in the very near future. |
