For 11 Euros admission fee, you can't really go wrong with this self-guided tour at your own pace. You also get (included in the tour) 3 beers and a bottle opener.

You could get on a canal tour for € 7.50 from Rondvaart Koou. It's a 1 - 1.5 hr. tour.

The best thing to do in Amsterdam is to walk around, take pictures, sit in cafes, eat, have a drink, smoke, and walk around some more... and repeat 'til you can't walk anymore!

A must-see when in Amsterdam. For me, it was a sad and interesting experience. A visit to the Anne Frank House is about an hour long. There are no tours or guides. A tour brochure with background information about the different rooms in the museum is available at the entrance. The museum is open from 9AM - 9PM (summer hours). Get there early or late in the day to avoid lineups. Admission is € 7.50 (adult).

The National Monument, a white stone pillar erected in 1956 to commemorate the victims of World War II. This is where you'll see people just sitting and resting their tired feet. Good spot to watch people.

The Royal Palace, which served as the city hall from 1655 until its conversion to a royal residence in 1808. Beside it are the 15th-century Gothic Nieuwe Kerk (New Church) and the Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum.
