BATON ROUGE, LOUISIANA

by ABL1958 - last update: Dec 4, 2003

I recently returned from a trip to Louisiana to spend time with the love of my life in the area he knows best: the "Deep South". We spent a whirlwind 3 days mainly in Alabama and Louisiana but also traveled to Mississippi and touched the panhandle of Florida. It was a fantastic trip and one I'll never forget! I'll know it better as time goes on and I'm able to visit more often. Who knows, it might be my future home! The thought of warmer winters is certainly appealing to me lol. (But it's who you're with that counts the most, right?)

This picture was taken in March of this year....isn't it lovely? After coming from the cold North the sunshine, azaleas, and warm breezes were heaven-sent.

The Story Behind the Name:
In 1699 a French Expedition headed by Pierre le Moyne (also known as Sieur D'Iberville) explored the area in Louisiana around the southern Mississippi River region. The River separated the hunting grounds of the Bayagoulas and the Oumas Indians living on the Istrouma Bluffs. It's banks were separated by a reddened 30-foor-high pole with several sacrificial heads of fish and bear attached to the top and dripping with blood. This pole had been sunk there to mark the land line between the two Indian tribes. D'Iberville called this area Baton Rouge which is French for "red stick".

One third of Louisiana's population today is of French descent so a French accent is commonly heard throughout the area.

Remember to check the travelogue! Thanks.

Pros:"I live here now! It's warm, it's green!"
Cons:"too much competition with New Orleans :)"
In A Nutshell:"Small, pretty, seek-and-you-shall-find kind of city"
