Move away from the main tourist attractions to discover the surrounding area of Kumkapi and the fish market. Head west from the Blue Mosque, stroll around and get lost in the back streets among the old crumbling Ottoman houses. It is so peaceful around this area, as the bulk of the tourists/visitors rarely move away from the well trodden path and main attractions. Keep you eye open for the old wooden houses that are being held up by stilts and be amazed that people still live in them. You'll get a taste for the real Istanbul and how it would have felt like 100's of years ago.
