An ideal location | Steve & Adina last night holiday meal Feb 07 |
I am a frequent visitor to this lovely 700-year-old Bavarian town and would like to sing its praises. It is located at the start of the Romantic road that runs North through the center of what was West Germany. It is ideally placed for both summer and winter holidays with heaps of things to do and see both on the doorstep and in the local area. I go there mostly in the winter. Feb is quiet; the local ski slopes of which there are many are bare of tourists or locals and the snow usually very good (except for this year but that was the same throughout the Western Alps). I hire my ski gear from the shop at the base of the Tagelburg 2km from Fussen and the cost is minimal the gear is like new. I could run on for ages about the seasonal amenities for both adults and kids but you're best looking it up on the web. The hotel I stay in is the Kurcafe. I have read mixed views on the Kurcafe, but both my partner and I love it. Not low budget by any means, but in our opinion, very good, very friendly and very comfortable. (You pay for what you get). Even if you don’t stay there a mid afternoon visit for a coffee and a slice of their fantastic cake is a must. Accommodation locally is very reasonable and you can find self-catering apartments from around 50 euros or less a day in the off-season. I normally drive down from the Hook, 9 hours but you can also fly to Munich/Innsbruck and train to Fussen or hire a car. Car hire is handy for transport while they’re but the bus services, including ski buses and the train from the middle of town run with the usual German efficiency. Take a trip to Lansburg am Lech approx 50 km North, another fantastic medieval town with lovely walks beer kellers and cake houses. I've been here many times as I have family living in the town (my reason for staying in Fussen... close enough to visit, but not on the door step if you get my drift) Another must-do trip is to the top of the Zugspitz (Germany's highest mountain) by cable car stunning views over the Alp's as far as the eye can see. Finally there are loads of little villages around Fussen that do warm and friendly accommodation and excellent food. With a car you can visit different ski slopes every day. The variety is far greater and it's far more fun then a cramped and stressful package deal. |
