Desaru, the popular beach resort, is located on the eastern tip of the peninsula (near Singapore - about 1½hr drive from Johor Bahru). Getting to the largest district of Johor at the south-eastern end of the peninsula, requires an hour's drive from Johor Baru. From the north, the easiest way is to take the Kulai exit of the North-South Expressway followed by a 90-minute drive to the historic town. The coastal road is a lot more scenic.
There are reliable public transportation services from all major towns. There is a direct ferry service between the Tanah Merah ferry terminal in Singapore and Sebana Cove, about an hour from Kota Tinggi.
Kota Tinggi is a small town in the state of Johor of Malaysia, located around 42 kilometers north-east of Johor Bahru, on the road to Mersing. It can also be reached by ferry from Changi terminal in Singapore where tourists need to pass through the immigration check point at Tanjung Belungkur ferry terminal before their arrival. Kota Tinggi is also the name of the district where the town is situated.
Kota Tinggi is also known as a historical town because the Sultanate of Johor was established here. Many historical tombs are found here including the famous Makam Sultan Mahmud Mangkat Dijulang (the tomb of the last sultan of the Malaccan Sultanate line), Makam Bendahara Tun Habib Abdul Majid and Makam Tauhid in Kampung Makam. Makam Laksamana Bentan is located in Kampung Kelantan.
The town itself is of little interest, but the waterfalls at Lombong, located 15 kilometers north-west of town are popular tourist destinations.
