Fort Phil Kearny

Fort Phil Kearny was established in July 1866 to protect people using the Bozeman Trail heading north to the goldfields in Montana. It was named after a popular Union General. It was the largest of three forts in Wyoming and Montana along the trail. Its secondary mission was to prevent intertribal warfare. During its two year existence the fort figured prominently in the battles between the US Cavalry and the Sioux, Arapaho, and Commanche Nations.

Museum Displays

There are several nice displays in the Visitors Center about the history of the people that lived in the area and the history of the fort.

HI, Jim! I see there's lots to see there! This place has a very peculiar name I must say...
