The terrain here was created some 65 million years ago when the same forces that created the Colorado plateau caused a wrinkle in the earth's crust. This formation is called the Waterpocket Fold and it forms the center of the park. Capitol Reef was also under water for many years. The park today is located in South Central Utah along Utah Highway 24. Stop at the beautiful visitors center first to get a map of the park and other information to help you plan your visit and maximize your enjoyment of the park. There are also some points of historical interest along the highway.

Gifford Farmhouse

In addition to the natural beauty in Capitol Reef National Park, there are several historical sites like the Gifford Farmhouse that offer a glimpse of the human habitation of the area from pre-history to recent times.

Scenic Drive

The scenic drive through the main part of the park is a paved 16 mile drive past a number of the attractions in the park. Yoy can continue further down the road after the paving ends into Capitol Gorge or connect to a rough 4 wheel drive road. There are several parts of the park you can only get to with a high clearance 4 wheel drive vehicle or on foot.
