The Opera House

The Opera House is actually just Judge Roy Bean's home. He named it "The Opera House" in an attempt to lure Langtry here to perform. She did not visit the town, however, until after Bean's death.

The Jersey Lilly

Judge Roy Bean dispensed his justice from inside the building he named the Jersey Lilly (he misspelled the name of the actress). The Jersey Lilly also served as a bar and a billiard hall.

Judge Roy Bean Center

The town of Langtry started in the late 1800s and became more popular when in 1883 a silver spike joined the railroads stretching from New Orleans to San Francisco in nearby Deadman's Gulch. Langtry is most famous, however, because of Judge Roy Bean. Bean came to the town, was appointed as Justice of the Peace and declared himself "The Law West of the Pecos". Bean was a very colorful character. He even decided at least one case before he was officially sworn in. One of his most famous stories is his obsession with the actress Lily Langtry (hence the name of the town). Bean was also very fond of drinking and shooting pool and would sometimes do both before and after trials. He frequently shot pool with the accused. He named his home "The Opera House" in hopes of getting Langtry to visit. She did not come to the town that bore her name, however, until after Bean's death. They have a nice Visitor's Center with a small museum that you walk through for admittance to the grounds. Admission is free. Hours are 9 AM to 5 PM daily except New Year's Day and Christmas.
