Kermit and Winkler County

There were very few people in the town of Kermit or even in Winkler County, until oil was discovered in the Permian Basin in 1926. Both the town and the county grew quickly. Kermit has grown to almost 5600 people; but still retains a small town atmosphere. Not sure where Kermit got its name but it was NOT from Kermit the Frog :-(. The Winkler County Courthouse was built in 1930 in response to the population boom in 1926 after the oil discovery. The building was built by architect David Castle using a combination of Classical Revival and Beaux Arts styles of architecture. Winkler County was named for Texas Confederate Veteran Colonel G. M. Winkler.

Medallion Home

The Medallion Home was built by W. H. Seastrunk in 1907, then moved into town in 1910. It is the oldest existing structure in the county, and has period furnishings. The Medallion Home is located in Pioneer Park on the east side of town.

Heritage Park

Kermit has Heritage Park across from the courthouse. Frankly, the park was not that impressive, but the mural was nice.
