Gatesville and Coryell County

Gatesville is a town of 16,000 (up 3% since 2000) located at the intersection of Texas Highway 36 and US Highway 84 in Coryell County in the Prairies and Lakes Section of Texas. The town was established about 1854 and was named after nearby Fort Gates. Gatesville is home to 5 of the 8 women's prisons in Texas including the one where all the women on death row are housed. It is the county seat of Coryell County. There has been evidence found of human habitation in the area since at least 4500 BC. Coryell County was established in 1854 and was named for James Coryell a frontiersman and Texas Ranger killed by Comanche Warriors while protecting settlers. The spectacular Coryell County Courthouse was completed in 1898 using the Italian Renaissance style of architecture.

Coryell County Museum

Gatesville has a very nice museum with the world's largest collection of spurs.

Veterans Memorial

There is also a nice veterans memorial on the courthouse grounds.
